Do actions speak louder
than words? According to this article, it stresses that body language is
important when communicating. One reason I chose this article is because I’m so
trusting of people and I find it intriguing that there are signs which can give
away people’s hidden intentions. In fact, there are people who read body
language for a living. I would love to have a job where I study people all day.
It’s like I get paid to people watch!
This article is related
to language because it studies the language of the human body. Once, I remember
reading that nonverbal human communication is approximately 92% of
communication. What I find most interesting about the article is how the
article breaks down body language into several sections then gives a
“disclaimer/warning” of some sort. There is a “one size does not fit all”
section and a “tips” section. These sections explain that body language differs
from cultures and one should not use body language to try to manipulate
situations in a negative manner. I find this interesting because I find that
knowledge is power and I feel that absolute power can corrupt absolutely. I
definitely agree with the article in the sense that certain bodily actions are
common. For example, the body language for lying tends to be common and the
body language for confidence tends to be common specifically in the United
States.
I would love to learn
more about this topic. I feel that by possessing the ability to read body
language affectively will give me an upper hand when it comes to my profession.
I plan on going into the field of human resource management and one of my
responsibilities may be hiring people. I need to know how to read people and
select the best candidates for employment. Not only does body language affect
employment, it affects the world. As humans, we need to understand that
different cultures have different expectations for body language such as
showing the soles of your feet in Arabic countries is rude. People need to be
considerate and respectful. In addition, people who possess body language
skills should use their abilities for good.
Now I must end this with
a quote I found:
What
you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say. - Ralph Waldo Emerson

I agree with you, non-verbal communication or the body language speak louder than verbal words. The body naturally tells the truth because the movements are unconscious thoughts. When I was taking Communication 101, we learn many of the tips in the article. For instance, body language varies from culture to culture and not having the same body language meaning. Learning to read body language takes practice and not always judge a person by first impressions. We should not forget that humans are complex. Like you, I want to learn how to read body language, especially when someone is lying to you. However, we should remember, there are people who are experts at lying and it is difficult to tell the difference.
ReplyDeleteSome of the information on the article made me laugh because it is true. I see it quite often, especially, when I am in club meetings or when presenting in front of the class. Even I am guilty in zoning out during meetings or in class, as well as when I present in front of the class. I am not as confident as I would like. Thank you for sharing this interesting article.
I'm surprised that having good posture shows confidence. Of course it makes sense. I feel that I don't have the best posture. Perhaps I should work on it.
ReplyDeleteThat's so interesting! I chose the same topic, although a different article. I find it rather fascinating that language ranges and comprehends so many different things on many different levels (such as verbal and non-verbal communication). I have also always wondered about people's intentions through body language. I have a friend who once read my body language... he said I liked him in front of a group of people I'd just met. You can imagine how brightly red my face became at the utterance of those words as I retracted my stance. However, this is a perfect example of body language.
ReplyDeleteP.S- I love your pictures. It makes it more interesting. :)
I think it is important to have at least a minimal knowledge of body language because it can really come in handy. Sometimes what our body language conveys or what we see in other peoples body language can be more important than what they actually have to say.
ReplyDeleteit is important to have at least a minimal knowledge of body language because it can really come in handy. Sometimes it's hard to tell if someone is ok if they say it, to be able to see the body language you can see the truth.
ReplyDeleteI have never really looked at body language when talking to people. At least not consciously. I think that we may pick up on it a lot without really thinking about it. Although if we all were to make a more conscious effort to read body language, I think communication would be a lot easier.
